The Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 Low “University Gold”, also referred to as “Lemonade,” is one of the most sought-after collaborations between Virgil Abloh’s Off-White label and Nike. This sneaker continues Abloh’s legacy of reimagining classic silhouettes with deconstructed aesthetics, bold color blocking, and signature design elements that blend luxury with streetwear.
Design & Aesthetic
The sneaker features a striking University Gold leather upper, making it an instant eye-catcher. This vibrant yellow shade covers the entire upper, from the toe box to the heel, giving the shoe a bold and energetic look. In contrast, the Metallic Silver Swoosh adds a futuristic and premium touch. This Swoosh is outlined with Off-White’s signature zigzag stitching, reinforcing the DIY, industrial-inspired aesthetic that defines Abloh’s work.
Signature Off-White Elements
As with previous Off-White x Nike collaborations, this Air Force 1 Low incorporates several signature details that make it stand out:
• Exposed foam padding on the tongue and collar, enhancing the unfinished, raw design language.
• Helvetica branding on the medial side, featuring Off-White’s signature text reading: “Off-White™ for Nike ‘Nike Air Force 1’ Beaverton, Oregon USA c. 1982”.
• A plastic zip tie, which comes in a bold blue shade, hanging from the laces as a trademark Off-White detail.
• The word “AIR” printed in black on the midsole, paying homage to Nike’s iconic Air cushioning technology.
Construction & Comfort
The shoe maintains the classic Air Force 1 Low silhouette, ensuring familiarity in terms of fit and comfort. The full-grain leather upper provides durability, while the perforated toe box allows for breathability. A rubber outsole with circular traction patterns ensures reliable grip, making it as functional as it is stylish.
Cultural Impact & Release Details
The Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 Low “University Gold” was released on July 10, 2021, as an exclusive drop at the ICA Boston museum, in conjunction with Virgil Abloh’s Figures of Speech exhibition. Retailing at $150, the sneaker quickly became a grail among sneaker collectors and resellers, with aftermarket prices skyrocketing due to its limited availability and high demand.
This release is considered one of the most iconic in the Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 series, following previous colorways such as the MCA (University Blue) and MoMA (Black) editions. It remains a symbol of Abloh’s design genius, blending luxury, culture, and innovation into one unforgettable sneaker.
